Facebook is often blocked at work, or can be a major time sink. When you’re at work or working on a project, you may find yourself in your Gmail interface sending emails or talking in chat. Now, you can link Facebook directly into your Gmail too.
This will allow you to multitask easily and more efficiently.
If you’ve ever had Facebook blocked on campus or at work, this is also a good workaround to unlocking Facebook and talking to your friends.
How to Access Facebook from Gmail
First things first, you need to login to your Gmail account. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register one and log in.
Once that is done, you’ll want to follow these steps:
- Click on the gear icon on the right side of the page.
- Click on settings in the dropdown menu.
- Click on the labs
- Click enable for “Add any gadget by URL.”
- Click save.
Now, users will want to go back to the settings page and click on the Gadgets tab. Within this tab, you’ll find the following: “Add a gadget by its URL.”
In this textbox, you’ll want to paste the following URL into the field: http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/104971404861070329537/facebook.xml
Now, all that’s left to do is click “Add”. You’ll now find the Facebook gadget at the bottom left corner of your Gmail account page.
Simple, easy and effective. This method is a great way to use Facebook right in Gmail without the need to ever tab out of the Gmail pane. If you’re a person that spends most of your days sending emails, this will save a lot of time switching tabs to respond to a client.
Note: Google has since depreciated the “Add any gadget by URL” functionality due to malware-related issues.
Since the method above has been outdated, we’ve found no viable method of using Facebook with just Gmail. However, there are a few helpful browser add-ons and plugins that will allow you to use Facebook without actually being on the site.
Firefox and Waterfox Options
The best add-on for Firefox is Facebook Messenger. This is not an official app, but it works very well and brings a lot of Facebook functionality right to your browser. You simply need to download and enable the add-on to begin.
Once you restart your browser, you’ll notice the Facebook icon on the top right of the screen.
Clicking on this icon will allow you to send messages, post updates and do a whole lot more. It’s fast and easy to install, and you’ll find that using it couldn’t be easier.
When open, the add-on will display your Facebook options in a left-side window pane.
Chrome has a lot of extensions that you can download for Gmail. However, the absolute best Facebook extension is called “Facebook for Chrome.” Simply install the extension and you’re almost ready to start browsing and using Facebook at your leisure.
On the top right, you’ll see a Facebook icon which you can click. This icon unlocks your news feed, allows you to send messages and post updates all without ever being on the Facebook main page again.
