If you have recently married and chose to take your partner’s name, you already know that you are going to have to go to the DMV in order to change your name on your driver’s license, credit cards, and other documents. One place where you may not think of changing your name is online. Today we live in a digital world and our online presence is a huge part of both your professional and private life. We all have usernames, display names, and email addresses to consider changing as well.
Of course getting married is not the only reason to consider changing your username on your gmail account. Perhaps you first came up with your username in college and now that you are a professional you do not want your nickname to be known.
No matter how technologically advanced you are, or what the reason may be for changing your username, making a name change for your digital accounts is somewhat new territory and you might be left wondering how to change your username on your gmail account.
The first thing to understand when you are considering changing your username in gmail is how the username is chosen for the gmail account. The primary username for any gmail account is created during the initial setup process of the account. If you have setup your gmail account through a Google plus account that uses an email from another server, your primary username will be changed to the name used at gmail.com. Email notifications will all be sent to the primary email address that is provided.
Gmail offers users the ability to use as many alternate email addresses as they want. You can promote an alternate email address as the primary username by removing it from the alternate email address list and then creating a new account that uses that particular email as the primary user name for the account.
If you have used gmail as your google account, changing your gmail username is not possible once you have registered it. The only way to change the name is to delete gmail from the google account and then using your non-gmail address for the account. Another alternative is to create a new google account altogether using the username that you desire.
Creating a New Gmail Account
If you need to change your primary google account name, chances are that you are going to need to delete your current account in order to make the necessary name change. In order to do this you will need to do the following:
- Log into your current account on the main page of Google. Click on the account button that is located in the top right hand corner. From there, find the edit button that is located near the email address and then click on remove in order to delete the alternate email address that you want to use as your new primary account. You do not have to complete this step if the current email address you wish to use is not set up as an alternative email for the account.
- Sign out of the current account and then on the next screen click on the sign up for new account button.
- Fill the form out for a new gmail account. This includes your name, gender, birth date, and the username and password that you want. You will also need to fill in a captcha box to prove that you are not a robot.
- A verification code will be sent either by phone call or through a text.
- Sign into your account using the new information as well as the verification code you were sent.
Creating a New Gmail Username
If you just want to change your username for your gmail account you will first log into the account that you want to make the changes to. Next, click on the account settings tab for the account and then click on the edit information button that is provided. You will then find a circle that is located under your current username for gmail. You can click on this name and then simply enter the name that you would like to be used now. Once you have entered the new name that you wish to use simply click on the save changes tab. A confirmation email will be sent to you and you will need to click on the link provided in the email in order to make the change permanent.
Changing the name on all your google accounts will require you to access your google plus account. You will go to google plus and find the profile tab. You will then need to click on your username in order to change it. There will be a more options tab available where you will enter your new information from your gmail account. Once you have made the changes to your name that you desire you will click on save. A new window will pop up and you can click on the rename button in order to confirm any changes that have been made.
Benefits of Changing your Username in Gmail
There are many reasons why you may consider changing your username for your gmail account. As mentioned above you may have gotten married recently and want your gmail account to reflect your name change. Perhaps you have used an embarrassing nickname for your account and now you want to change it.
Your username for your gmail account or any other online account says a lot about you. This username could be the reason that you do or do not get a job that you are applying for. While having a cute or fun name on your gmail account may seem harmless, when using this account for your professional life it is important to consider how it makes you appear.
If your current username for gmail is not professional and you are using this account for business, it may be time to consider following the steps above in order to make a change.
