Gmail is one of the best free email services in the world. When you open an account, you can add contacts, compose emails and even chat with friends directly from your Gmail dashboard. When it comes to deleting Gmail emails on Android devices, there are a few different methods you can choose from.
Let’s take a look at both the app version of Gmail and the web-based version so that you fully understand how to delete your mails.
Deleting Emails Using the Gmail App
Google makes it easy to delete email right inside of the app. Not only does the app display emails differently, it makes email deletion a little confusing at first. This occurs because there is a setting which few users know about that makes deleting easier instead of showing the archive button.
Touch and hold your finger on the email. Once the menu displays, you will be able to choose “delete” and completely delete the email from your inbox.
Open the email you would like to delete. Locate the “delete” button at the very button of the screen. Click the button and confirm that you would like to delete the respective email.
The hardest method. Method 3 requires you to change a few settings to be able to swipe your email for deletion. Simply do the following:
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap the Gmail icon.
- Click settings.
- Click general settings.
- Click the checkbox next to Swipe to delete.
Now, you can easily swipe your message left or right to delete the email in your box. If the swipe is archiving your messages, you will need to alter another setting. This is done by:
- Opening the Gmail app.
- Clicking the Gmail icon.
- Clicking settings.
- Clicking general settings.
- Navigating to the Archive & delete actions.
- Clicking show delete only.
Now, your swipe will delete your mail instead of putting it into your archives.
Deleting Gmail Emails in a Browser
The web interface allows for even further deletion methods that are fast and easy. Simply navigate to Gmail, and you can use the following ways to delete any mail(s) of your choosing.
Open an email. Locate the delete icon (it is a trash bin) and click delete.
On the main Gmail front page, you will notice that next to the email subjects displayed you are able to click a checkbox. Not only will this highlight the email of your choosing, but you will be able to select as many emails as you would like.
Now, you will notice that once selected, a tray of icons appears at the top of the dashboard. Click the delete icon again and all of your selected messages will now be deleted.
At this moment, you will also see an Undo message at the top of the screen. If you accidently deleted the wrong message, you can click undo, or simply retrieve it from the trash.
Deleting Multiple Messages From Users
There are times when you will be bombarded with emails from spammers or different users. Gmail allows you to easily delete these messages by:
- Going to the main Gmail dashboard.
- Click the checkbox next to a message from a user you want to filter.
- Click the more icon.
- Click Filter messages like this.
- Click the select all checkbox.
If there are several pages of messages, text will appear above your first message that says select all conversations. Click this text and hit delete. Now, you will have deleted all corresponding emails that matched your filtered options.
