Many websites and apps have made it easier to log into their sites. Rather than signing up and making up a new account, you can use your Google account to sign in. Though this is one of the easiest ways, it is also a threat to your email security.
When you log in through Gmail, you give a partial access of your account to a third-party company. Some might just use your credentials for logging in, many others get into your inbox and read your emails.
Email Security – Know which apps are connected to your Google account
As we now know that the third-party gain complete access of our account once we log in, it is very important to know which companies and apps have access to your account. Obviously, the third-party companies will never tell you that they are reading your emails; but it is good to make sure from our side that the companies that have our Gmail credentials are credible enough.
How to manage third-party companies that have access to your account
There is a simple process to know about the apps that have access to your account and also the level of access they have. If you are concerned about your email security, you can change the access level of any or remove it from the access list altogether.
Here is the procedure to know about the sites that can access your Gmail account:
- Go to myaccount.google.com
- Under ‘Sign in and security’, go to ‘Apps with account access’
- A new page will appear that will show you the list of apps and companies which have saved your Gmail credentials and can access your inbox at any time. The list also shows the sites of which you have saved the passwords for, but these companies are not of your concern here.
Removing third-party apps from the access list
In the ‘Apps and account access’ section, if you click on the apps section, Google will present a list of all the third-party apps which have access to your account. If you see any suspicious app in the list and want to remove its access to your Google account, you can do it by clicking on the app and selecting the remove option.
While it is getting easier to log into apps and websites through your Google account, it is important to realize that these third-party apps and sites gain a certain level of access to your Google account once your log into them through your Gmail account. This access level can include reading your inbox; a threat to your email security. So, it is better to have a check on the apps and sites that have access to your account and manage their access.
