While Google recently made headlines for announcing the closure of its Inbox by Gmail app, it also made another important announcement; the Gmail offline app is also going away, this time forever. The Google announced in a recent post that the Gmail offline mode will be pulled on December 3, 2018.
The Gmail offline app has been around quite some time; it was introduced, pulled back, and then reintroduced to Gmail many times before. But Google recent announcement seems to be the final decision about the fate of the Gmail offline app.
Why Google is closing down the Gmail offline app?
The main reason for pulling the Gmail offline is that the recent Gmail update incorporated the Gmail offline features by default. This means that if you want to have the features of Gmail offline, you will need to upgrade to the latest Gmail version. The features of Gmail offline embedded to the updated Gmail version is named as the native Gmail offline mode.
How to activate native Gmail offline mode?
The native Gmail offline mode is a feature that replaces the previous Gmail offline mode and embeds directly to your Gmail account.
To activate this mode, you will have to go to your Gmail account settings; and find the Gmail offline mode to enable it. If you have an office Gmail account or a student Gmail account, you need to contact your IT administrator. The Gmail offline mode will be available to your account once the GSuite administrator of your organization activates it on the GSuite.
How Native Gmail offline mode works?
Once activated, the native Gmail offline mode works similar to how the original Gmail offline worked. This means that even if an internet connection is not available to you, you could still access your account; and do activities like composing an email, archiving or deleting the emails in your inbox. The account will sync as soon as an internet connection is available.
In the native Gmail offline mode, you have the option to save the offline Gmail data on your PC. Moreover, you will have some new features such as smart compose in your Gmail offline mode too. This feature will make it easier for you to compose emails by predicting the next words.
So, there we have it, Google is pulling Gmail offline mode for good on December 3. This is because we now have a native Gmail offline mode with the updated version of Gmail. So, unlike the Inbox app, we won’t miss the Gmail offline mode much because all the features of Gmail offline mode are being replicated in the native version.
