Google’s Gmail is one of – if not the – most popular email services in the world. But one thing Gmail doesn’t offer is customization. Until now.
In case you hadn’t heard, Google is now planning on offering custom Gmail addresses – at a price. What does this new service have to offer? Is it something you should consider for your business?
What is a Custom Gmail Address?
Simply put, a custom Gmail address will give you exactly what it says: a custom email address. Rather than having firstname.lastname@example.org, your new email address would be email@example.com.
This custom email address will still allow you to enjoy all of Google’s services, including calendar, video meetings, docs and more. And you can even access these products right from your tablet or smartphone – there’s no need to be on a desktop computer.
We know that Google will be offering a custom Gmail address, but what about storage, support and other helpful tools? Those questions are answered through Google’s tiered pricing system for custom addresses.
The Cost of a Custom Gmail Address
Google Is Offering Custom Gmail Address
Not surprisingly, Google will be tacking a fee onto their custom address offering. As of right now, it looks like Gmail will be offering three different tiers, each at different price points.
It all starts with just a simple custom Gmail address. If that’s all you want and nothing more, then you’ll only need to pay $2 per month for it. Keep in mind, this doesn’t include any additional storage, support, or anything more. However, you will receive your own custom address.
The middle tier offers you a custom address with an additional 30GB of storage, 24/7 support and business tools. This plan costs just $5 per user per month, which is a reasonable price for most businesses.
If you’re looking for even more, there’s a third tier: Gmail for work unlimited. For $10 per user per month, you’ll get a custom address, unlimited storage (technically 1TB max if you have under 5 users), archiving and eDiscovery to protect your business, 24/7 support, and business tools.
The Potential Benefits of a Custom Gmail Address
From a business perspective, there are plenty of benefits to paying for a custom Gmail address. For starters, your employees are probably already familiar with Gmail and its interface. You can also take advantage of Google’s products, too, without having to sacrifice branding in the process.
While $10 a month may be a little steep for each user, the middle tier is reasonably priced and comes with plenty of additional storage. For larger businesses, the “unlimited” tier is a smart option, especially with the addition of Google’s eDiscovery service.
Another great advantage of using Gmail’s platform is that there’s no legwork in setting up your email address. If you’re not familiar with the process of setting up an email address for your domain and then forwarding your email to your Gmail address, paying for a custom Gmail address makes sense.
Google’s custom email address offering is still in its testing phase, and there’s no official launch date for the service. However, there is mention of a custom Gmail address on the Google for Work page.
The convenience and familiarity that Gmail offers may make this new offering a hit for Google. The price points offered are viable for both small, medium and large businesses alike. Most businesses would be willing to pay $2 for a custom email address – even without the additional storage perks – just for the ease and convenience of being able to use the Gmail platform. It allows businesses to produce a professional email address without having to set up an email address through their own domain.
