Google is shutting down the famous Inbox by Gmail app early next year. Google announced in a statement that the plan was due in March next year and this will allow them to focus more on their primary email product; the Gmail. While some people in the industry speculated such a move from Google, given the recent big updates to Gmail, many people were expecting that the Google with continue with the Inbox by Gmail app and use it as a platform to experience new features in its email service.
Inbox by Gmail app
Inbox by Gmail app was a lighter alternative to the Gmail. It was introduced in 2014 by Google with some cool features and many users liked the app for its innovative way of introducing new features to its email service. Many features that we now know through Gmail were actually introduced by the Inbox by Gmail app.
Some of the features include the famous Smart Reply that has made its way to Gmail in the recent update. Other features included showing attachments in the inbox and a task manager that worked inside the inbox.
Why is Inbox by Gmail app shutting down?
When Inbox by Gmail was introduced, Google called it a product that focuses more on what matters the most; as far as email is concerned. And as a matter of fact, the product appeared to be true to what the company was claiming about it. The features that it was equipped with, provided a better and easier emailing experience to the users.
The Inbox was not a completely different email service. It worked on your Gmail ID; and as the years passed when we saw Inbox features being replicated in the inbox, one could predict the future of the Inbox by Google; a mere testing ground for the new features that would be introduced in Gmail later on.
Google will never reveal the exact reasons why Inbox by Gmail is shutting down. But so far, from the series of events, two strong reasons can be deduced; the first one is, as most of the features from Inbox by Google are replicated in the Gmail, there is no need to run two similar services. Secondly, any new features that we will see in the future will be tested right in the Gmail; and Google doesn’t want to test it through another app.
Inbox by Gmail is closing down in March 2019. And it is really sad news for all the application lovers who found it a great alternative to the primary Gmail. However, as most of the features are now a part of Gmail, they shouldn’t feel completely lost.
